AuSable Fly Fishing Weekend

My dad, brother and I, as well as my friend Sean planned to go on a guided fly fishing trip this weekend. Unfortunately Matt was really sick and could not make it up, though fortunately Sean's friend Matt (funny coincidence) was able to fill the open seat. So, we went on an eight hour guided drift boat fly fishing trip. Our guides were Brent and Al from Scribner Outfitters. We had two river drift boats that hold three each (two fishing and one guide). These aluminum boats were incredibly stable even with all of us standing and drifting down the river.

The weather kinda sucked (at least it didn't rain). Temps in the 40's, and constant winds about 15 mph with gusts up in the 30's. Needless to say it made fly fishing very challenging. We were novice fly fishers, but this trip really honed our skills!!! There weren't a bunch of bugs on the water and it was too cold for a hatch that night (if you know about fly fishing). The guides worked really hard to try and find fish for us. Sean and Matt were able to pull in four (or five?) browns each, my dad snagged EIGHT and I somehow only pulled in ONE?

I brought up my fly tying stuff and Friday night we tied up a few Hendrickson patterns. My dad caught all of his fish on one of the flies HE tied and my lone fish was caught with one of my flies. We were pretty excited about that! Here is my dad's proud little fly.

Needless to say we had a good time. The guides were really disappointed with the outcome of the day and invited us to come back out and fish with them again during their slower part of the season. We'll look forward to that day and we'll keep you updated! We also look forward to the day when Noah starts fishing with Daddy, Grandpa and Uncle Matt!
